In the latest episode from our 'Social work around the world' podcast mini-series, part of the Social Work Community podcast, we speak to social workers Nikki Murphy and Lynn Roberts, who live and work in the Falkland Islands, one of 14 British Overseas Territories.
Situated in the South Atlantic, 8,000 miles from the UK and 300 miles away from the eastern coast of Argentina, the islands are very remote.
Social work policy is shaped by similar legislation to the UK, however, the Falklands has its own laws and legal system.
Nikki heads up a 20-strong social services department, which is made up of two children's social workers, 11 residential workers and other support workers. Lynn is the manager of the children's social work team.
This episode is an eye-opener for those who do not know much about British Overseas Territories, and an opportunity to learn how social work is carried out in small and remote communities. Listen to this fascinating episode now.
